Dream Ins started on the Big Island of Hawaii in April of 2008 (see White-Black Whole Dream Ins). I was inspired to initiate Dream Ins while living at the Resonance Project - a scientific community and permaculture site. At that time i was writing a screenplay for feature-length film entitled “Light Path”.
In the movie, a group of people come together in dreamtime every night they fall asleep. For me, it’s best to write from firsthand experience and I’ve never experienced a shared dream before. Then i thought, wow wouldn’t that be extraordinary to experience meeting each other in dreamtime, and rather than just write about it - why not just do to it.
Immediately after me and my friends, Michael and Keala, committed to organize a dream in, i was visited in a dream by Dan Chee, the Dinéh (Navajo) light path medicine man that i worked with years prior. In the dream he wears a necklace of two flashlights connected by a luminous tube.
He says, “If you are going to do a dream in you’ll need this - a woman gave it to me.” He places the necklace around my neck and then throws two dark obsidian rocks onto the ground where they glowed white light.
As the dream ends i awaken in a state of profound awe. Then it comes to me that we will dream in a big dome and i need to tell the participants to bring flashlights so they can write their dreams in the middle of the night without disturbing others.
Of course there exists a very spiritual component to the Dan Chee dream as well - for what better thing to bring to the darkness of dreaming than the light. Of all intents the purest is simply to shine the light of consciousness, in witness of the infinite intelligence and creativity that emerges directly from our soul as we dream.
